Brunei is an independent sovereign state located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in South China Sea and surrounded by the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. Remaining parts of Brunei is divided between Malaysia and Indonesia countries.

Bruneians have different way to welcome new born baby. Father or another senior male relative whisper the azan or call to prayer into both the baby’s ears, so they may grow and become part of the ummah. Honey is rubbed against the baby’s palate or tongue, so that the child may grow sweet.

The baby is usually named seven days following the birth in a small ceremony attended by immediate family. Parents are encouraged to give their children meaningful names, especially in Arabic.
