Assam is a state of India in the north-eastern region surrounded by Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya. The people of Assam are intermixture of Mongolian, Tibetan, Iranian, Aryan and Burmese ethnic origins but mostly inhabited by the tribes of Mongolian origin. About two-thirds of the Assamese are Hindu. Islam is the second-largest religion, representing about one-third of the population. Christian minorities are found among Scheduled Tribe population. Other religious communities are Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Animism.

Assamese is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language used by Assam people. It is the official language of Assam. Nagamese, an Assamese-based Creole language is widely used in Nagaland and parts of Assam. Modern Assamese uses the Assamese script and historically Kamrupi script. Assamese script is written in the same manner as English.
