The Slovaks are a West Slavic people that primarily inhabit Slovakia and speak the Slovak language. Slovaks show closest affinity to their Czech neighbors, followed by Polish, Hungarians, and then other eastern European nations. Slovaks also show close genetic affinities with Eastern Austrians.

Slovak is the official language of Slovakia. The Slovak language is a descendant of Proto-Slavic, itself a descendant of Proto-Indo-European. Slovakia uses the Western name order with the given name first and the surname last, although there is a tradition from the communist era to reverse this order in official administrative papers. Most Slovaks do not have a middle name. The family name forms for males and females are distinct in Slovakia, making it possible to identify gender from the name alone.

The most common Slovak given name are Jozef (male) and Mária (female); the most common family name in Slovakia is Horváth (male) and Horváthová (female).
