Punjabi Surnames
Punjabi surnames originate from occupation, place of origin, patronage, parentage and often from the names of ancestral clans affiliation within a community. There are three basic communities in Punjab, namely the Khatri (mostly warriors and merchants), the Arora (mostly merchants), and the Jatt (mostly landlords). The majority of Punjabi surnames trace their roots to these three communities. Generally punjabi surnames could end in Singh for a man or Kaur for a woman.
Punjabi surnames showcase the diversity of the various communities that originally belonged to the region of Punjab and its surrounding areas. People from Punjab have spread across the world yet have retained their surnames, which reflect their rich culture and heritage.
