Dutch Baby Names

The Dutch referred to as Netherlanders, are an ethnic group of Germanic people native to the Netherlands. They share a common culture and speak the Dutch language. Dutch people and their descendants are found in migrant communities worldwide, notably in Suriname, Chile, Brazil, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and the United States.

Dutch is the main language spoken by most Dutch people. The language was first attested around 500, in a Frankish legal text, the Lex Salica, and has a written record of more than 1500 years, although the material before around 1200 is fragmentary and discontinuous.

Dutch is related to other languages in that group such as Frisian, English and German. Many West Germanic dialects underwent a series of sound shifts.

Dutch names consist of one or more given names and a surname. The given name, as in English, is usually gender-specific. Dutch naming tradition is a fusion of nobility, strength and eminence.

Daan and Emma are still the most popular new baby names in the Netherlands. In 2012, these names were most frequently given to newborns. Bram was the second most popular boys’ name in the Netherlands, followed by Sem. The SVB is responsible for the family allowances and therefore well aware of the names of newborns.
