Sinhalese are an ethnic group native to the island of Sri Lanka. They constitute 75% of the Sri Lankan population and small percentage of Sinhalese people follow Christianity. The Sinhalese people speak Sinhala which is an Indo-Aryan language and are predominantly Theravada Buddhists.
The Sinhalese are also known as "Hela" or "Sinhala". These synonyms find their origins in the two words Sinha (meaning "lion") and Hela (meaning "pristine"). The name Sinhala translates to "lion people" and refers to the myths regarding the descent of the legendary founder of the Sinhalese people, the Prince Vijaya.
The Sinhalese speak Sinhala, also known as "Helabasa"; this language has two varieties, spoken and written. Sinhala has its own writing system, the Sinhala alphabet, which is a member of the Brahmic family of scripts, and a descendant of the ancient Indian Brahmi script. Sinhala is one of the official and national languages of Sri Lanka. Sinhala, along with Pali, played a major role in the development of Theravada Buddhist literature.
Sinhala language brought to Sri Lanka by northeast Indians who settled on the island in the 6th century BCE. Sinhala language is influenced by many other languages, prominently Pali, the sacred language of Southern Buddhism and Sanskrit.
